Pend, Sculpture, The Queen's Walk

Summary

Type Sculpture

The eight blocks of which it is composed were cut in a Purbeck Quarry to the sculptor's specifications and transported to the site she chose and where she worked on the design over a period of months, first in 1983 (for the London Sculpture Exhibition), then again in 1984. The resulting piece echoes deliberately surrounding features from the concrete texture of the Concert Hall to the mitred joints where cobbled areas meet pavement. In the view shown [on p. 44 of Strachan's book] we see four blocks with a narrow horizontal and a wider vertical joint and the deep carved grooves echoing the cornice that decorates Waterloo Bridge.
